The merry-go-round, or carousel, is a staple at amusement parks everywhere, but where and when did this type of ride originate, and how has it changed since its origin? Learning about the history of carousels provides insight into how these rides became so popular and why you can still find them today at most amusement parks, fairs, and even shopping malls. What is a Carousel or Merry-Go-Round?

Using the simplest explanation, carousels are rides that involve the use of various types of seating attached to a rotating platform. Traditionally, when people think of carousels, it conjures up an image of seating in the shape of animals, such as horses or circus animals, moving up and down while the entire platform rotates. The ride is typically accompanied by circus-type music played on a loop.

How Were the First Carousels Designed?

The first merry-go-rounds were not rides at all. The concept was developed way back in the 12th century by knights who wanted to hone their agility and jousting skills. After mounting their horses, the knights would form a circle and gallop while simultaneously tossing a ball back and forth. This game was referred to as the little battle or carousel. The knights also used this technique to train for war. It’s easy to see how the first evidence of carousels led to the development of later rides with horses pretending to gallop while being arranged in a circle.

How Did Early Carousels Become Modern-Day Amusement Park Rides?

Variations of the carousel skill game persisted well into the 17th century and evolved into other skill-building events, such as spearing overhead rings while still galloping in circles. Children were enamored with these games of skill, so soon, make-believe imitation carousels with wooden horses were created just for them. Many children wanted to be able to actually move in a circle during this pretend plan, so by the 18th century traveling fairs began to feature merry-go-rounds that involved wooden animals suspended by chains to a mechanism that would spin in a circle when hand-cranked or pulled by either horses or humans. Music was later added as an additional feature.

As carousels gained even more popularity, engineers and inventors improved the design and made many changes over time. The platform model was developed by the middle of the 19th century, and soon after, a steam-powered version was created to replace the need for horses or humans to turn the crank. Gear mechanisms were later added to give the horses their signature up-and-down movement and more closely resemble the rides still seen today.

Electricity replaced the steam engines, and with the addition of electricity came light-up carousels. This technology also allowed automatic band organs to be installed. Further advancements included the replacement of the organ with modern speakers.

These days, you can expect to see variations of the carousel, though the spirit of the original game still resides within. Some have animals, while others use seats, swings, or cars, but all are designed with fun in mind .

When you take a ride on a go-kart course you are experiencing a type of family fun that has been around for decades. You may have never considered how and when go-karts were first created. The history of go-karts began back in the 1950s and has evolved into the exciting activity you know and love today.

What Is a Go-Kart?

Before you learn more about the history of the sport, it is helpful to know what constitutes a go-kart. Go-karts come in a variety of forms but in general, they are small, lightweight quadricycles that contain a two-stroke engine for power. Most varieties either have a skeleton frame or a lightweight, open frame exterior. The engine power depends on the purpose of the vehicle, and some designs have enough power to race motorcycles or fast cars. Recreational go-karts at commercial properties are usually set up to race around a miniature race track with rules and safety measures in place to make it an exciting past-time for the entire family.

When the First Go-Karts Created?

Although it may seem as though go-karts have been around as long as automobiles, the first one originated well after automobiles hit the road. In 1956 a Californian mechanic named Art Ingels helped build race cars for the Kurtis Craft Company to send to Indiana for racing. These types of race cars were not accessible to the everyday person, so Ingels thought up a plan to create a racing vehicle that could be enjoyed by anyone. His idea involved creating a small, four-wheeled vehicle that would be driven by one person but still be fun to race.

Inglels shared his idea with a friend named Lou Borelli, who was able to use his knowledge of engines to help design the first go-kart. Together, they combined Ingels’ skill for building vehicles and Borelli’s engine knowledge to create a prototype go-kart that contained all of the basic parts needed for a test run, including an engine that was usually used for lawnmowers. After initial unsuccessful test runs and design tweaks, the pair debuted their creation in the parking lots of the Rose Bowl and caught the attention of many spectators who were interested in learning more.

How Did Go-Kart Racing Become Popular?

That first go-kart was just the beginning of the phenomenon, which caught on quickly in racing circles. Although the duo created other versions that stemmed from their original design, other companies also got in on the game. Once Go Kart Manufacturing, Co. was established by Duffy Livingstone and Roy Desbrow in 1958 the industry was propelled into the future. The new designs from Livingstone and Desbrow included inexpensive motors that with a lot of power and could be manufactured to meet the new demand.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, experts have learned a great deal about how this virus spreads between individuals and ways to reduce the chance of becoming infected. Although staying at home was the initial recommendation, individuals and families have now begun to venture from home for both essential and social activities to improve mental and physical health.

When participating in activities outside the house, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adhering to social distancing guidelines for the safety of yourself and others. It’s easy to follow these guidelines when you visit open outdoor spaces such as the park, as long as you remember to keep protocol in place to make your visit as safe as possible.

What is Social Distancing?

The practice of social distancing involves reducing your chances of contracting or spreading illness by remaining physically distant from others who are not in your immediate household. The standard distance provided by CDC guidance is a minimum of six feet. Although social distancing is a useful tool to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, it should be used in conjunction with other preventive measures.

Washing your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds; using water and soap and rubbing vigorously

Visiting a park during the pandemic can be a low-risk, outdoor activity. Some parks require reduced capacity, while others remain on reduced hours of operation due to reduced staff. It is always a good idea to check the park’s website or call ahead to make sure your visit goes as planned. As you move around the park, make sure to give everyone extra room and don’t stand, walk, or bike too close to other groups. How to make a Winter Birthday Party Special

As a parent, it can be difficult to carve out time for those special moments when the season is so hectic, but you know you still want to give each of your children those moments when they feel special and uniquely loved.

We could all use a little help so we’ve put together a few tips for planning magical winter birthday parties that will make your kid feel celebrated!

When it comes to gifts, single out your birthday kid.

A team member who celebrates a Christmas Day birthday shared some of her family’s techniques for making her feel special amid all the festivities.

One of the smallest things that made the biggest difference to her was gift wrap. Her family didn’t combine her presents so that she ended up missing out on birthday fun; instead, her birthday gifts were held separately and wrapped with bright, festive birthday paper instead of snowmen and Santa Clauses.

“It’s not easy sharing the most famous birthday of the year,” she said. “But my family really tried to give me a distinct opportunity to celebrate. Combined with letting me have a separate celebration with friends a few weeks after the holiday, I rarely felt overlooked or overshadowed.”

Celebrate early or late.

If you’re afraid that your kids won’t have good attendance at their party because of the timing (when schools are on break and friends are traveling to see grandparents, winter birthday party attendance can be sparse), let them pick their own birthday.

For example, if you have a child with a birthday on December 18, have a small family celebration on that day and book a party venue for a get-together with friends one month later for their “official” celebration. We can’t deny it; it’s fun to play laser tag as a family outing.

However, here’s the thing: sometimes, some parents have this feeling of guilt over beating (or perhaps even annihilating) their children in games or other feats of skill. And, even if you’re the kind of parent who doesn’t believe in going easy on your kids, it’s also hard to retain your parenting dignity when you just can’t restrain yourself from shouting “BOO-YA!” in your kid’s face.
